Corey et al. challenged us to think through what type of group we would be leading in the future and the steps we need to take in order implement what was discussed through the video and workbook. I work with girls who are walking through an unplanned pregnancy. In my current job at a maternity home, we have a group meeting once a week with our residents. During this meeting it is important to allow every girl to have a voice and be able to speak during this time. Corey et al. states, “We expect everybody to become a participating member. If members do not bring themselves in spontaneously, we continue to encourage them to speak. We think it is important that our tone be welcoming and not demanding” (Corey et al., 2014, p. 19). Naturally a person’s personality plays a part in how they interact within a group. It is important for the group leader to know when to ask a quieter group member to speak up in the discussion and when to shift their focus from a group member who might talk all the time. One of my favorite leaders to look to and understand how they followed the Lord as they led a group of people is Joshua. Time and time again scripture says that Joshua rose early in the morning. He rose early to seek the Lord and spend time with Him, but also to be productive and do the work that God had called him to do. This speaks volumes to me as I learn more about how beneficial, refreshing, and rewarding it is to wake up early. While this is not necessarily an attribute I would implement while leading a group, because often people do not want to meet very early in the morning, I think it would be beneficial for me to get up and plan and work on what the meeting will cover early in the morning. We have learned from Jacobs et al. that being prepared for groups is such an important aspect of the group dynamic, and I think it would be beneficial for me to prepare for the groups I lead early in the morning.
